Crime strikes twice for Kagiso woman - who survives to tell of lucky escape

An eyewitness has described how she narrowly missed being struck by bullet fire when she was caught in a shootout between police and armed robbers in Kagiso‚ west of Johannesburg.

Dudu Ntsele said she was hanging her clothes on a washing line around 11am when she heard police sirens. “The sound was coming towards my direction and I saw a speeding car driving at a high speed‚ on our street. The driver lost control and hit a wall and stopped at an electricity box. A police vehicle then stopped behind it.

“Two men in the front seat jumped out and started shooting at the police who retaliated by firing back. I ran to the back of my house because my kitchen door seemed far and the two men were approaching it.

“I was scared for my life. Bullets flew above my head as I ducked and fell to the ground. I cannot count how many bullets were fired by both police and robbers because they were many. One of the men then jumped the wall at the back and fled‚ while another was arrested.”

Ntsele managed to crawl back inside her house sweating.

“I thought I had been hit. I looked all over my body for bullet wounds. I then knelt down and prayed for being alive after so many bullets missed me‚” she said.

This is not the first time that crime has hit her home‚ says Ntsele‚ who is now considering erecting a wall around her yard.

She said 10 years ago‚ a robber was arrested inside her ceiling after he hid there from police. The man gained entry through her open kitchen door.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Kay Makhubele said officers had received a report of a hijacked a silver VW Polo in Tshepisong‚ a few kilometres away from the scene.

The car was carrying boxes of cigarettes and bundles of toilet paper.

“The car was reported stolen and our members spotted it. They gave chase and the suspects opened fire on them forcing our members to fire back. One suspect aged 32‚ was shot and injured in his body‚ another aged 21 was arrested. The injured suspect‚ who is under police guard in hospital‚ was wanted for a serious offence in the area‚” said Makhubele.

Police recovered a 9mm pistol on the scene.

Makhubele said they are investigating if the suspects are linked to other crimes in the area.

Police have opened a case of hijacking‚ armed robbery and possession of stolen goods.
