Father faces incest charge

ANOTHER Mpumalanga man has been charged with raping his daughter and impregnating her three times.

The 53-year-old taxi owner from Kanyamazane is alleged to have started raping his daughter in 2001 when she was only 11 years old.

His daughter fell pregnant three times between 2001 and 2003, and she was allegedly forced to abort the foetuses.

Yesterday, the man appeared in the Nelspruit Regional Court to face 14 charges of rape. He has not been asked to plead.

The man, who has been in custody since his arrest in March, stood nervously in the dock.

The State also alleges that the man wrote a love letter to his daughter.

The court ordered him to submit a sample of his writing to compare the handwritings.

Prosecutor Elise du Plessis asked the court to postpone the matter to next year because she had not received the sample results from the forensic laboratory.

"I am still waiting for the analysis report," she said.

The man's lawyer, Aggrey Machubeni, did not object to the postponement.

However, he asked the court to postpone the case for the last time to allow the State to obtain the results from the forensic laboratory.

Magistrate Andre Geldenhuys granted the postponement, for the last time.

The man was remanded in custody until February.

- In September, Geldenhuys sentenced a man accused of raping and fathering three children with his daughter to life imprisonment.

Geldenhuys said the 55-year-old man, also from Kanyamazane, was not eligible for parole.

The man's sentencing was postponed more than 80 times because the man had pleaded ill-health.

When he appeared in court, he would get off his wheelchair, lay on the floor coughing and clearing his throat for the duration of his appearance.

When sentencing the man, Geldenhuys said the man had manipulated and lied to his wife, daughter, family, community members, pastors from his church, his numerous lawyers, doctors and the court.

"You ruined the life of your own daughter ... You did not rape her only once, but for years. You took away her right to live, her education.

"She could not live a normal life that children her age did. She left school at Standard 6 (Grade 8)," Geldenhuys said.
