More cops bust for demanding bribes

Allegedly demanded R15,000 from a transport company to turn a blind eye to the illegal goods it was moving

A policewoman and a police reservist were arrested on Wednesday in connection with bribery in Worcester, Western Cape police said.

A third police constable was being questioned, but had not been arrested, said Warrant Officer November Filander.

He said the arrested pair, both 31-years-old, allegedly demanded R15,000 from a transport company to turn a blind eye to illegal goods it was moving. It was unclear whether the bribe was paid.

Worcester is a major through point for trucks travelling from Cape Town to Johannesburg along the N1 highway.

“The investigation has been underway since November last year and is continuing,” said Filander.

Further charges could be added.

Filander said the two were surprised when they were arrested in front of their colleagues at the change of shift parade at 5.45am.    

They were being held in the police cells in Bellville, near Cape Town, and would appear in the Worcester Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of corruption.
