Footprints link suspect to murder

The accused (18) is on trial for raping a girl and brutally murdering his friend 'for not wanting to share money they had robbed from foreigners'

A POLICE officer has told the Bloemfontein High Court how footprints linked a suspect to the brutal death of a teenager.

Warrant Officer Morne Pienaar said the footprints he had collected from the murder scene corresponded with the shoes that Lentekile Patrick Mogeledi was wearing when he was arrested earlier this year.

Pienaar works as a dog-handler at K9 unit and his other duty is to collect footprints and vehicle tracks.

"On January 1 2012, I was called to a murder scene in Thaba Nchu and the body of the deceased had been removed. I identified two different types of footprints, one set of which belonged to the deceased," he said.

Two days later he was called to Selosesha police station in Thaba Nchu, where Mogeledi had been detained.

"I asked him to remove his shoe for me to compare with the prints on the plaster caster reproduction I had collected. I recognised that the pattern of his shoe matched those of the prints I had collected," Pienaar said.

Mogeledi, 18, has pleaded not guilty to the brutal murder of his friend Samuel Mogosi Mokoena.

Mokoena, 17, was stabbed multiple times and his intestines ripped out, allegedly by Mogeledi, in Thaba Nchu, Free State. in December 2011. His body was found the following day in a dilapidated house.

It is alleged that Mogeledi killed Mokoena after he had refused to share money they had robbed from foreign nationals in the area.

The two were allegedly part of a gang that robbed shops owned by foreigners.

After killing Mokoena, Mogeledi met an 18-year-old woman whom he forced to walk with him to his parental house, where he allegedly raped her.

The trial continues.
