A promising young Blue Bulls rugby player and three suspected robbers were killed at the weekend when their getaway vehicle crashed into his car
Nico van Vuuren, who played as a lock and hooker in the Bulls’ under 21 team, died at an intersection near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga on Saturday afternoon, minutes after three men had robbed a butchery, Beeld reported.
Van Vuuren’s white Toyota Hi-Rider bakkie collided with the robbers’ Nissan 1400-bakkie and everyone involved in the accident died instantly, according to Joseph Mabuza, spokesman for the department of transport in Mpumalanga.
“Nico didn’t even know what hit him,” his father, also Nico, told Beeld.
“My child is dead and he didn’t do anything to deserve it. It’s not fair ... it’s just not fair.”
Police spokesman colonel Leonard Hlathi confirmed the robbery.
“We found R115,000 in cash in the Nissan bakkie, as well as two 9 mm pistols.
“These robbers are thought to have been involved in various other crimes in the Lowveld area,” he said.
