Vavi hits out at 'hypocrisy' of politicians

THE general secretary of the Congress of SA Trade Unions Zwelinzima Vavi has questioned the hypocrisy of government officials who are embroiled in tender scandals.

Referring to allegations that Communications Minister Dina Pule's "boyfriend" benefitted from the R36.2-million that was raised for last month's ICT Indaba, Vavi said: "How many times have we spoken about leaders avoiding a conflict of interest. Yet, the more they speak about that themselves in public, the more they are caught up in acts that undermine the speeches they made yesterday".

Vavi was speaking at Equal Education's first national conference in Tembisa in Ekurhuleni on Sunday night.

"If found to be true, Pule's alleged romantic relationship with businessman Phosane Mngqibisa puts her in a potential conflict of interest as Mngqibisa is said to have been the second signatory and withdrew money from an FNB account belonging to event organiser Carol Bouwer."

At Pule's request, the matter is now being investigated by Auditor-General Terence Nombembe.

Vavi said there was a need for combined efforts to defeat the scourge of corruption.
