STJWETLA has been cleared more than seven times and the people who are there now are criminals who have to be charged, MEC for local government and housing Humphrey Mmemezi has declared.
"They are criminals who want to jump the queue. There are many people who are still waiting for houses and they do not want to wait," Mmemezi said.
He condemned the building of shacks in the settlement.
"Most of the people living there are newcomers. They have been invited by others," he said.
Mmemezi said thousands of families were relocated to Alexandra Extension 7, 9 and 10, Diepsloot and Bramfischerville, in Soweto.
"We cannot be the government of Alexandra. If we do, it means we will never go to other areas like Orange Farm (in the Vaal) and Thembisa (in Ekurhuleni) and the backyards in Tshiawelo," Mmemezi said.
"We are currently in talks with the residents to get them to move ... The long-term aim is to relocate the whole settlement and reclaim the land for development."
He said they had submitted a development proposal from the local chamber of business (Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry) for consideration by the Joburg Property Company (JPC).
"I can say that the pace of response from JPC is disappointing. The project has the potential to yield 1264 units once all the land parcels earmarked are consolidated into a project ... (We) estimate that the development will cost about R500-million," Mmemezi said.
