Life in jail for 7 who set guards alight

SEVEN men have been jailed for life by the Polokwane Circuit Court of the Limpopo High Court for the murder of four SBV security guards in 2006, according to an SABC report.

The eighth man was sentenced to four years' imprisonment for car theft, the SABC reported.

The guards - Deon Steyn, Hennie Botha, Markus Malete and Dirk Kleynhans - died in their cash-in-transit van after robbers set it alight during an attempted robbery outside Baltimore.

Handing down sentencing, the judge said: "I cannot sufficiently imagine what the deceased went through, trapped in the motor vehicle.

"One wonders what went on in the minds of the accused when they set the motorvehicle alight."
