Former footballer lays charge against cops

"I was assaulted for no reason"

FORMER AmaZulu football club player Bhekamaswazi Kubheka is in excruciating pain after he was allegedly seriously beaten up by police officers at eZakheni in Ladysmith on the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

The alleged incident happened around 7pm on Sunday.

"I was assaulted for no reason. I can't even eat because my mouth is swollen."

Kubheka played for AmaZulu between 2001 and 2004.

"I was stopped by police a few metres from where they had set up a roadblock. They ordered me out of the car and as soon as I stepped out, six of them started assaulting me.

"I was punched and kicked. I lost four teeth during the assault," he said.

He claims police stole his wallet with R500 inside, bank cards, driver's licence and two cellphones.

"After they finished beating me up, they helped me to my feet and pushed me into my car and ordered me to drive off, which I did," he said.

He then drove to eZakheni police station to lay a charge but no statement was taken, instead he was just handed a form to take to a doctor to record his injuries.

He laid charges of assault and robbery against the police.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said: "A case has been opened, but no arrests have been made."
