A MATRIC pupil, who is also a learner representative council (LRC) president at a Limpopo school, will appear in the Nebo magistrate's court for murder while his peers sit for the final-year examinations on Monday.

Japta Molamo, 22, appeared briefly in the Nebo magistrate's court in Sekhukhune on Thursday for allegedly murdering a 35-year-old man, Derrick Ntjana of Thatje village, in Jane Furse, a fortnight ago.

He was refused bail and remanded in custody and his case was postponed to October 20, three days after the commencement of the matric examinations.

"By the time Molamo appears for a formal bail application his peers will have written four subjects, including computer application technology paper 1 and 2 and information technology," Limpopo MEC for education Dickson Masemola said.

The Congress of the South African Student (Cosas) in Limpopo has expressed disappointment over the murder allegations levelled at Molamo.

Cosas provincial chairman Shockie Masha said it was disappointing and disgusting for a student leader, trusted by both parents and pupils alike, to be linked to murder.

Jane Furse police spokesman Constable Moses Molepo said Ntjana was allegedly having fun with friends at a community event when Molamo and his co-accused, Cetice Kubjana, pounced on the party and disrupted the function.

"Patrons at the wedding allegedly chased them away," Malepo said. "They waited down the road and later attacked the deceased with knives.

The deceased was certified dead on arrival at the hospital."
