Meningitis alert in Tshwane

A TOTAL of 27 cases of meningococcal meningitis have been reported in Tshwane since May, the city said yesterday.

"Between May and September 28 cases of meningococcal meningitis were reported in Tshwane. This year 27 cases have been reported," spokeswoman Dikeledi Phiri said.

Meningococcal meningitis is the most dangerous type with infants being the most at risk.

Its symptoms are fever, severe headaches, nausea and vomiting, stiffness of the neck and legs, tiredness, sleepiness, light-sensitive eyes, confusion, skin rashes and seizures in children.
