'Mbatha at club on night of robbery'

WILLIAM "King of Bling" Mbatha could not have robbed a Johannesburg businessman in April 2009 because he was enjoying champagne at a nightclub the whole night.

Nadin Dobloni testified in the Johannesburg high court yesterday that Mbatha was at the Moloko Club in Rosebank, Johannesburg, on the night Mantsie Mojapelo was robbed.

"My boyfriend, Benson Mbatha, and I met William at the Coffee in Brooklyn, Pretoria. We did not stay for long because the place was full. We drove to Moloko," she said.

"We got there at about 9pm or 10pm. We danced and drank alcohol. William never left my company. We were together all the time."

Benson is Mbatha's younger brother.

Dobloni said she remembered every detail of the night because it was the first time she went to the nightclub with Mbatha.

Dobloni, who smiled each time she answered questions, seemed to have irritated Judge Naren Pandya, who said: "You see, it is required that when I am making my findings I look at your demeanour. You seem to enjoy your little stints because you keep smiling when you answer."

Mbatha, who is also known as Mashobane, is on trial for a series of armed robberies in which he is alleged to have passed himself off as a cop before robbing his victims.

Earlier the state had called the sales manager of a Midrand company that sells Lamborghini laptops.

At his previous appearance Mbatha disputed the authenticity of a Facebook picture showing him with a yellow Lamborghini laptop.

He argued that the picture was manipulated because his laptop was white, not yellow.

Frans Smit of Recton testified that only yellow and black laptops of the type, imported from Taiwan, were available.

But Mbatha's lawyer. Francois Roots, said there were many imitations that look like the real item.

The trial was postponed to November.
