Artscape to honour jazz legend Ntoni

CELEBRATED jazzman Victor Ntoni is one of the few living legends who are fortunate enough to be honoured while still alive.

The KwaLanga-born musician will be feted when a tribute concert called: Victor Ntoni plays Victor Ntoni is staged at the Artscape in Cape Town on September 23 and 24.

Those who love Ntoni's music will have an up-close moment with him for two days. The concept is part of the Imvelo Festival, which has been incorporated into and runs as part of Heritage Month celebrations.

Ntoni, who has been a musician for 40 years, is being honoured for his valuable contribution to music. He is a bassist, composer, singer and arranger, whose work can be heard in recent recordings by some of South Africa's best jazz singers, among them Hugh Masekela, Barney Rachabane, Duke Makasi and Abigail Khubeka.

Artscape head of indigenous arts Sticks Mdidimba says: "It is Heritage Month, Victor is one of the living heritage jazz legends. When he went into exile he left a big legacy behind. As part of our new mandate of giving genres like jazz attention, Victor was the first person who came to mind. He is a genius and his composing talent is out of this world."

Mdidimba says the night will be dedicated to Ntoni himself. "We have asked him to play jazz standards in the first part of the show. The other part he will focus on his latest album, Heritage."

He will be backed by Lungiswa Plaatjie, Sisonke Xhonti and Tete Mbambisa, among others.

Ntoni has performed with jazz greats such as Abdullah Ibrahim, Nelson Magwaza, Dave Brubeck and his son Darius.
