Fire damages ANC office

WHILE upset members of the ANC were continuing a sit-in at the party's offices in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, a fire broke out causing major damage to the office of the party's regional secretary, Alpha Shelembe

ANC members have had a sit-in at the premises for 13 days.

They are protesting against councillors allegedly imposed on the region and appointments of those accused of corruption - including Shelembe, who is also the new deputy mayor of Msunduzi municipality.

Shelembe was the speaker in the previous Msunduzi administration and stepped down last year when the municipality was placed under administration for financial mismanagement.

KwaZulu-Natal police were yesterday questioning a man who was "handed" over to them after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm in the vicinity of where the ANC offices were torched in the Moses Mabhida region in the Pietermaritzburg CBD earlier.

ANC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala said: "The matter has been reported to the police and they are investigating.

"We will keep on engaging our members who have been staging a sit-in in our offices in that region.

"This is an ongoing process and we will not stop talking [with our members] until the matter is resolved amicably," Zikalala said.

Cosatu provincial secretary Zet Luzipho said while they did not want to speculate on the reasons for the fire, they were however not surprised about the incident.

"There have been many investigations (into corruption) in the region, but they never came up with conclusive evidence. But at this stage, we don't want to speculate," Luzipho said.

"I must however say that we strongly condemn such actions in the strongest terms and call on the police to bring the perpetrators to book."

Police spokesperson Inspector Joey Jeevan confirmed that one person was being questioned.

"No arrests have been made so far and the cause of the fire is unknown since our investigations are continuing," Jeevan said.

"We will only institute charges once we have found something conclusive about the cause of fire."

This incident happened just when the ANC's task team formed three weeks ago is about to start an investigation into irregularities in the party's local government elections list.

The party appointed NEC member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to lead the tateam, which is still in KwaZulu-Natal.
