Beachfront rape probe continues

POLICE are still investigating the abduction and 15-hour gang-rape ordeal of a Johannesburg businesswoman on the Port Elizabeth beachfront in December last year

The 48-year-old woman, formerly of Port Elizabeth, was in the city on business when she decided to go for an afternoon walk.

She was followed by men who attacked her when she reached a secluded area of Kings Beach. The men held her at knifepoint and dragged her over the sand dunes.

The next morning a jogger saw her and alerted police.

Days later Mzwandile Jakavula, 52, a bush dweller who lives in the area, was arrested after information led detectives to his "hideout".

Brigadier Ronald Koll said Jakavula made numerous futile attempts to get bail but he was finally denied release last week Thursday.

Koll said detectives had now teamed up with the sexual offences unit to identify more suspects.
