Memorial service for Bam

A MEMORIAL service for late judge president Fikile Bam will be held this afternoon in Sophiatown, Johannesburg, hisfamily said.

Bam, 74, died of suspected lung cancer on Sunday morning at Parklane Clinic in Parktown, and not at Milpark Hospital as previously reported.

At the time of his death, Bam was judge president of the Land Claims Court where he had served for 15 years.

Bam's niece Tina Eboka said yesterday that the memorial service will be hosted by Christ The King Church in Sophiatown, where Bam was a member since his youth.

The memorial will start at 5pm at the church in Ray Street.

"He was initially admitted to Milpark Hospital but was discharged a week ago. When he complained about his left lung discomfort, he was admitted to Parklane Clinic on Tuesday," Eboka said.

His death was mourned by President Jacob Zuma and his cabinet, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and the Law Society of SA.

"Judge President Bam's passing marks the end of an illustrious legal career that was characterised by a selfless and tireless service in the defence of the marginalised in the country," Mogoeng said.

Bam, brother of former Independent Electoral Commission boss and businesswoman Brigalia Bam, started his legal career in 1978.

He was appointed a mediator for the IEC in 1994, when South Africa held its first democratic elections.

Eboka said her uncle would be buried in his birthplace of Goqwala village, Tsolo in Eastern Cape on Tuesday next week.

She said Bam is survived by his wife Xoliswa, six children and four siblings.
