ELPHAS Dube has dedicated 36 years of his adult life to teaching.

Dube, a principal at Daveyton Intermediary School in Ekurhuleni, was last week honoured by his colleagues for his contribution to education.

Teachers at his school held a surprise thanksgiving ceremony for Dube, 63.

The principal was pleasantly surprised when he arrived at the place he was supposed to have lunch with a friend to find his teachers and family gathered to honour him.

"Thank you very much for doing this," he said.

Dube started his teaching career in 1974 and became a principal in 1979.

Teacher Nhlanhla Hlajoe said: "This is just to thank him for being a principal full of kindness. He is a supportive leader who has also become a father to some of us."

His wife, Bellina Dube, who has been a teacher for 34 years, said: "He is very passionate about education. The teachers and the learners have become a part of our family."
