Corruption is a problem - Sexwale

HUMAN Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale says corruption remains the government's worst enemy because it undermines service delivery.

"Corruption is a big problem in government. People are using money earmarked for projects or programmes for personal things," Sexwale said at the weekend.

Speaking at the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) 50th anniversary celebrations in Gugulethu, Cape Town, Sexwale also said the veterans of the ANC military wing would receive social housing from the government.

"We have reached an agreement with Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu about the new housing project for MK cadres."

But he warned the veterans that they should not feel entitled to such benefits simply because they were MK members.

Sexwale also called on the ANC to mobilise support in the Western Cape so that it could win the province back from the DA in the 2014 general elections.

Sexwale said it was important that the ANC "made the coloured community feel at home within the party".

"The coloured people in Western Cape must have a sense of belonging in the ANC," Sexwale told the audience.

"We must work hard so that we can achieve our goal."

Western Cape remains the one province that the ANC has not been able to win outright.

ANC national executive committee member Tony Yengeni said the event was also a day to remember MK's cadres who had died in the struggle for liberation.

Yengeni also called for unity among the ANC members and supporters.

"Unity in the ANC is very important," he said.

"We won't achieve our goals if we are not united."

Earlier in the day, ANC leaders including provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile and his predecessor, Mcebisi Skwatshwa, visited NY 5 cemetery in Gugulethu and cleaned eight graves of MK cadres, including ANC veteran Christmas Tinto and student leader Sthembele Mathiso.

They also visited the Gugulethu 7 Memorial.

About 30 people, including MK cadres, marched to Gugulethu Community Hall for Friday's event.
