Outrage over irregular water supply

THE residents of Mangaung and surrounding areas say they are sick and tired of the on-and-off water supply to their homes and have urged the Mangaung metro municipality to fix the problem before Christmas.

This was the second time in three months that most areas of Bloemfontein were experiencing sporadic water shortages.

In September Mangaung residents struggled to access water as a result of a burst pipe at the local Welbedacht Dam.

The dam supplies water to most areas in Bloemfontein.

The residents said their concern was that they might have to spend Christmas without water.

They pleaded with the municipality to fix the problem quickly as they would like to enjoy Christmas.

Resident Martha Moreng said: "It is even difficult with school holidays. We cannot cook or do basics such as washing and taking a bath."

Metro spokesman Qondile Khedama urged residents not to panic as council engineers were working on the problem.

He said there had been a shortage of water in Mangaung since Saturday due to a pipe burst, which affected the Brandkop reservoir.

"At the moment the level of water in the reservoir is low as the water being pumped into the reservoir is pumped out again for consumption," Khedama said.

He said some of the affected areas included General Wet, Pellisier, Fleurdal, Fauna, Wilgehof, Buitesig, Mandela View, Uitsig, Erlich Park, Vista Park Phelindaba, Freedom Square, Rocklands Bloemside and Turflaagte, among others.

"The municipality begs the indulgence of residents to bear with us while we try to restore water to normal," he said.

He said the situation would be back to normal in a day or two.

"The municipality would like to apologise for the inconvenience."
