Summit to end discord between chiefs and councillors

A TWO-DAY summit aimed at ending tensions between traditional leaders and councillors will be held in Umhlanga, Durban, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government said yesterday.

Spokesman Lennox Mabaso said the summit was aimed at finding lasting solutions and to define roles for the involved parties.

"The majority of municipalities are rural-based and the land ownership is within the jurisdiction of traditional leaders.

"When municipalities deliver services, traditional leaders have often raised concerns that councillors do not consult (them) and they are being undermined," he said.

Mabaso said development plans had been delayed because of the tension between traditional leaders and councillors.

The summit is expected to start to day and would be attended by the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Gugile Nkwinti.
