Eight men arrested over R100,000 stolen goods

POLICE in Roodepoort, on the West Rand, have warned criminals that they would be more vigilant during the festive season.

This was after eight suspects were arrested yesterday morning at the Sol Plaatje informal settlement on the West Rand after a tip-off.

Police spokesman Captain Pinky Tsinyane thanked community members for helping the police arrest the suspects, aged between 21 and 26 years, who were caught with stolen items estimated to be valued at R100000.

"Members of the community became suspicious after seeing the suspects in possession of the items as they are unemployed," Tsinyane said.

Among the recovered items were Kruger rands, DVDs, DVD players, watches, 22 cellphones, deodorants, bathing soaps, a 9mm pistol and copper cable.

"The serial number on the pistol was scratched off and there were also two bullets found. The copper cable has a street value of R36000 but the market value is estimated to be R16000," said Tsinyane.

"Two of the suspects are foreigners and six are South Africans. We'll also determine if the gun has been used for criminal activities before."

She said the suspects would appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court soon on charges of armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and stolen property.
