Cop in court for motorbike killing

THE suspected Nigerian drug lord arrested with three others in connection with the murder of Chanélle Henning has allegedly confessed to his involvement in the hit.

Those close to the alleged drug kingpin known as "The Debt Collector" said he would often be hired out to collect money owing to clients, sometimes with brutal consequences for those who owed.

An underworld insider, who once worked for the alleged drug lord, said: "He has four cases of murder and several of kidnapping and assault against him but they have all disappeared because of his connections."

It was reported yesterday that the alleged drug lord ordered the hit on Henning, 26, who was gunned down after dropping off her son at a preschool in Faerie Glen, east of Pretoria, last Tuesday.

Several intelligence community insiders, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed the motive for the murder was financial, with a person close to Henning supposedly owing the drug lord a substantial sum of money.

Constable Gerhardus Petrus du Plessis of Pretoria - who handed himself over to police just before midnight on Monday - has confessed to pulling the trigger.

Du Plessis appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court yesterday under heavy police guard and the case was assigned to chief magistrate Desmond Nair.

Du Plessis was suspended two weeks ago for allegedly stealing two murder dockets from the Hercules police station where he was based.

He entered the court room hiding his face with a blue T-shirt but the magistrate was not pleased and said: "I have never been in a courtroom where I cannot see the face of accused." He then removed the T-shirt.

Du Plessis is facing charges of murder, conspiring to commit murder and unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Acting Gauteng police commissioner Major-General Nobesuthu Masiye said yesterday that a further three suspects, aged between 20 and 34, were arrested on Tuesday. The alleged drug lord is among them.

Asked about the drug lord, Masiye only said: "We can confirm that the victim in this case was never on drugs."

The case was postponed to November 23.
