Cop held for fatal shooting

A CLERK at the Bolobedu police station was arrested at the weekend for allegedly shooting his lover and her alleged boyfriend to death.

The incident, which sent shock- waves through the Bolobedu community, took place at the woman's boyfriend's house in Mendingeni outside Kgapane in the Modjadjiskloof area on Friday afternoon.

According to information received from a police source, who was close to the suspect, he (suspect) had an on-and-off relationship with the deceased woman at the time of the incident.

"He ultimately jilted the deceased for another woman, who was a lead singer for a police choir in Giyani.

"The woman allegedly moved on with her life and dated another man (the deceased) in the same village, but the suspect went back to her and begged her to reconcile," said the source.

"They reconciled and dated until the suspect caught the deceased red-handed at the new boyfriend's house where they were cuddling and kissing and shot them to death, said the police source.

Limpopo police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba confirmed the events and said the suspect had received information that his live-in lover was visiting another man in the same village. On arriving at the house to investigate he found them in the dining-room, where he shot and killed them.

The suspect ran away from the scene and was arrested near Deerpark - a few kilometres from Tzaneen.

"We are investigating two counts of murder against the suspect and his case will be heard in the Bolobedu magistrate's court soon," Ramatseba said.

The deceased were identified as Malebelo Matatanya, 30 and Raymond Lebepe, 37, both of Mendingeni village in the Bolobedu policing area.

The incident occurred barely three weeks after a 39-year-old police reservist from the same area turned the gun on himself after he allegedly tried to kill his girlfriend at a Mphenama liquor outlet in Kgapane following an argument over cheating.

She survived the shooting and is still in hospital.
