STATISTICIAN-GENERAL Pali Lehohla had to persuade a reluctant Limpopo family to agree to be counted.

This was after the family had refused, on three occasions, to be counted "because they did not know the importance of the counting".

Lehohla visited the village of Nobody in GaMothapo outside Polokwane on Saturday as part of assessing whether the census in the province was on track.

The census has reached the halfway mark and is expected to be completed on October 31.

After Lehola's intervention the family in Nobody agreed to be counted.

The Stats SA head also had to enumerate Kgoshigadi Madipuane Mothapo at the local tribal office.

Speaking during the event, Lehohla said there were a few cases in which families refused to be counted in the province. They were trying to persuade the families to be counted.

"We are satisfied that the process of counting has gone smoothly in the province so far, save for the few families that refused to cooperate," said Lehohla, adding that there were also two families in Marble Hall who had refused to cooperate.

"What we are going to do is to issue letters warning the families who are refusing to cooperate with our officials about the action to be taken against them should they continue to be uncooperative."

He said the two families had torn up questionnaires in front of officials, as a way of refusing to be counted.

According to him the families will be dragged to court if they continue to refuse to be counted.

"We want to show communities that we are serious about our job and we expect them to cooperate."

Lehohla said he was generally happy with the overall performance of his officials in the province and he was hopeful that they would reach the target of completing the job on October 31.
