Dad foils bid for street justice after daughter's killing

Thembisile Mhlongo, 22, was allegedly shot twice in the head by her boyfriend, while she was holding their 5-month-old baby

THE father of a murdered woman yesterday pleaded with members of his family not to take the law into their own hands.

Siphiwe Mhlongo's daughter Thembisile, 22, was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend in Joubert Park, Johannesburg, on Saturday evening. The boyfriend allegedly shot her twice in the head while she was holding their 5-month-old baby at Chesterfield flat on the corner of Twist and Koch streets.

Mhlongo said he received a call from his other daughter, Thobekile, informing him that Thembisile had been shot dead.

The suspect, aged 26, is still at large.

"Thobekile was hysterical on the phone and urged me to rush to the flat. When I arrived, Thembisile was lying in a pool of blood but she was still breathing. She was rushed to hospital, but died on the way," Mhlongo said.

He said her daughter's alleged killer was very abusive.

"I had pleaded with her to end their relationship and she did not listen. It seems like she was trapped in that relationship and simply could not leave him.

"She was a slave because I'm told that she would do anything he wanted," he said.

The dead woman's grief-stricken uncle, brother-in-law and cousins converged on her flat yesterday.

Mhlongo said the family was angry at Thembisile's brutal death, but he pleaded with them to let the police do their job.

"I don't know what would happen if these guys (pointing at his family) ever ran into him. I am the head of indunas in Gauteng and it's important that I set the right example," Mhlongo said.

Thobekile said she was lying in her room when she heard an argument between her sister and the boyfriend.

"I then heard two gunshots, and after a while I went outside and found my sister lying next to her son. There was blood everywhere," she said.

Police spokesperson Pinky Tsinyane said a case of murder had been opened.

Tsinyane said anyone with information should contact Warrant Officer Titus Senoamadi on 072-212-4678 or Hillbrow police station on 011-488-6511.
