PUBLIC representatives need to behave honourably at all times.

So says ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga, who expressed his party's concern following an altercation between ANC MP Litho Suka and a woman motorist in Port Elizabeth last week.

"The confrontation, which stemmed from an accident involving both parties' motor vehicles, turned violent when Suka physically assaulted the woman," Motshekga said.

Suka has since furnished Motshekga's office with a written explanation about the incident, indicating his deep regret for his conduct.

Motshekga said public representatives were expected at all times to behave in an honourable fashion befitting the office they held.

"We therefore condemn in the strongest terms any form of misconduct or violence against any person, particularly women, who continue to bear the brunt of gender-based violence in our society."

The Herald newspaper reported on Tuesday that Suka allegedly hit Nolusindiso Mazantsi, 35, after accusing her of reversing into his car at a car wash in the KwaZakhele suburb last week. Mazantsi was with her two-year-old daughter Lihle at the time.

When approached for comment by the newspaper, Suka reportedly said: "She [Mazantsi] was swearing at me and asking me what I was going to do about it [the accident].

"I lost the plot and klapped [hit] her."
