IT WAS a nightmarish outing for Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs last night when they suffered setbacks in their Premiership matches at different venues.

The Buccaneers were defeated 1-0 by Free State Stars at Charles Mopeli Stadium, thanks to a Noah Chivuta stoppage-time beauty.

Amakhosi, on the other hand, were overcome by unfancied Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The victory was a big relief for Arrows coach Ernst Middendorp, whose future was hanging in the balance after a poor start to the season. Arrows scored in the 14th minute through Collins Mbesuma after goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune failed to properly handle an attempt by Dillion Sheppard.

Musa Bilankulu put Arrows 2-0 up with a beautiful header in the 26th minute. Substitute George Lebese pulled one back for Chiefs in the 54th minute.

However, it was Lebese who squandered a golden opportunity to level matters in the 56th minute when he missed a controversial penalty.

* Another Soweto side, Moroka Swallows, also failed to win but at least they managed a draw.

They drew 1-1 with Gavin Hunt's SuperSport United, who shot to the summit of the table to unseat Mamelodi Sundowns, who had temporarily occupied the top spot after beating Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 on Tuesday.

Swallows nearly courted disaster but had Macbeth Sibaya to thank after the veteran midfielder scored the equaliser at the Dobsonville Stadium, writes Kgomotso Sethusha .

Playing tirelessly in Swallows' attack as he did in the middle, Sibaya smashed in the equaliser in the 76th minute. Swallows had been chasing the game after United got into the lead early on through Glen Salmon in the 15th minute.

It boggles the mind how Swallows failed to win the game they so utterly dominated. They simply lacked that famous Muhammed Ali killer instinct to floor United.

United finished the game a man down after skipper Morgan Gould was sent off on the hour mark.

* In Pietermaritzburg, a late goal by Mor Diouf earned Maritzburg United a 2-1 win over Platinum Stars at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Diof scored on the stroke of full-time as the match looked headed for a stalemate.

Sibusiso Msomi scored for Stars in the 48th minute before Felix Obada equalised four minutes from the whistle.

* In Cape Town, an 89th minute goal by Eleazer Rodgers secured a point for Santos as they drew 1-1 with Black Leopards at Athlone Stadium. Rogers cancelled out Rodney Ramagalela's 33rd minute strike.

* Jomo Cosmos remain rooted at the bottom of the table without a win in seven outings after they played to a goalless draw with BidVest Wits at Sinaba Stadium in Benoni on the East Rand.
