Cop shooting in love triangle

THE tiny community of Shigalo in Malamulele, Limpopo, woke up yesterday to the shocking discovery of three bodies resulting from a love triangle shooting incident.

A 33-year-old police officer arrived at the dead woman's home in the early hours of yesterday and found her with another man.

After an argument the policeman drew his gun, shot and killed the woman, gunned down her man and later turned his service pistol on himself.

It is believed that the other man was the woman's husband.

She was at her home after having fought with him and they were in the process of reconciling.

Sowetan spoke to the Shihahele family where the body of Mabel Maluleke, 29, lay with that of the officer, a police sergeant in Kgapane, and her 53-year-old husband from Xihoko, who was a well-known businessman.

A member of the family, Samson Shihahele, declined to comment.

But the secretary of the local Sanco branch, Thomas Maluleke, said the family had expressed shock over the shooting.

"The businessman was the husband and it appears that after they had separated because of differences she came back to Shigalo," Maluleke said.

Shigalo tribal authority secretary Thompson Ntlhamu said the matter had been reported to the chief.

Police spokesperson Captain Mohale Ramatseba said yesterday the officer went to Shigalo at about 4am to visit his lover and found the husband there.

"An argument is believed to have ensued with his lover and he shot her, the husband and later himself," Ramatseba said.

The husband was a resident of Xihoko in the Greater Tzaneen area, while the sergeant was from Bolobedu near Modjadjieskloof.

Meanwhile Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Amon Mashigo has condemned the killings.

He urged police officers who have personal problems to use the services of the Employee Health and Wellness Programme rather than resorting to killings.
