Mantashe has 'insulted court'

THE DA has accused ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe of insulting the independence of Constitutional Court judges. The party has called for Mantashe to be repudiated.

"He has insulted the independence, impartiality and integrity of the Constitutional Court," DA shadow justice minister Dene Smuts said.

The DA was responding to Mantashe's comments in an interview with Sowetan published yesterday. He accused the judges of threatening the stability of the government.

He suggested that the Constitutional Court was setting itself up as opposition to the executive and Parliament.

Mantashe's comments came on the heels of a public outcry about President Jacob Zuma's nomination of Judge Mogoeng Mogoeng as chief justice.
