Suspect in cop killing confessed, court told

ONE of the men on trial for the murder of a police officer who died in an ambush at George Goch hostel last year, had confessed to the killing, the Johannesburg high court heard yesterday.

Sergeant Thabo Gama of the Jeppe crime prevention unit told Judge Betty Mahalele that Andile Langa confessed to his involvement in the July 30 shooting that claimed the life of Constable Mavhayisi Mhlongo.

Gama said he received a tip-off on the whereabouts of Langa on the Sunday morning of August 1 last year, but only effected an arrest five days later. He had left his contacts with hostel residents in the hope that useful information would come his way.

Accompanied by members of the organised crime unit, Gama arrested Langa while he was asleep with his girlfriend at the same hostel where the shooting took place.

According to Gama, Langa confessed to the shooting.

"The suspect told us that he was involved in the shooting and said he would assist us with whatever information we needed," Gama said.

Earlier in the proceedings, Warrant Officer Farouk Akoo took to the witness stand and bemoaned the "gruesome and unacceptable" way in which Mhlongo died.

Akoo testified that he arrived at the scene of the shooting at 9.15pm to find two cars riddled with bullets. In the cars were four people - two dead and two still alive.

The survivors were a bleeding police officer and a frightened little boy.

"Constable Mhlongo was lying there motionless. He was still in full police uniform including (bulletproof) vest," Akoo told the court.

"Mhlongo was bleeding heavily throughout his body. As I proceeded to the driver's side, I saw Constable Nemaitoni. He was bleeding heavily from the head and neck area.

"He was not able to speak and I could only see fear in the men's eyes. What I saw there (crime scene) was gruesome and unacceptable."
