SOUTH Africa's ambassador to Uganda, Jon Qwelane, could get a second chance at defending himself against an Equality Court hate speech judgment when his case returns to court on August 23.

He will apply to the motion court for the rescission of the default judgment granted against him in May, his lawyer, Andrew Boerner, said yesterday.

While still a journalist in 2008 Qwelane wrote a column published by the Sunday Sun in which he expressed his opinion on gays. The SA Human Rights Commission deemed the piece "Call me names, but gay is NOT okay" hate speech and approached the Equality Court for a ruling.
