Sheriff empties Shilowa's house

EMBATTLED former Cope deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa's house must resemble a hall.

Yesterday morning, the sheriff attached Shilowa's furniture from his Constantia Kloof, Roodepoort, house. An eyewitness who did not wish to be named said she saw two big trucks parked outside the house.

"His domestic worker was standing at the gate and talking to the men, who showed her what seemed to be documents. She did not open for them," said the witness.

She said the men used ladders to climb over the 7m wall to gain entry into the mansion.

According to the witness, the sheriff took sofas, wall units, a table, a fridge, a washing machine and diningroom suite.

Cope spokesperson Phillip Dexter said Shilowa's goods were attached after he failed to pay R500000 in legal costs related to him losing court battles against Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota.

"Shilowa was there when they took his goods. I didn't see him fight or anything. He left moments after the trucks pulled off," the witness said.

When Sowetan arrived at his house, the domestic worker and gardener said neither he nor his wife were at home. They refused to comment on the matter.

Shilowa's spokesperson Sipho Ngwema: "The stuff that was taken does not belong to Shilowa, it belongs to his wife.

"We will be making payments from tomorrow (today). We will sort things out before we go to court next month.

"We have given Shilowa strict instruction not to pay anything."

The dispute between Shilowa and Lekota stems from the party's chaotic in May last year. The two leaders went on a roller-coaster ride of legal battles after Shilowa tried to turn the meeting into an elective conference.

After the conference, Lekota asked the court to force the party to defer elections of office-bearers for at least four months, while issues relating to branch memberships were sorted out.

The Johannesburg high court granted the order. Shilowa lost the appeal with legal costs.
