'Stop cutting down trees'

WATER and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa has pleaded with communities not to cut down trees for firewood.

She was speaking at a sod-turning and han-over ceremony of the Moyahabo Greening and Vegetable Garden at Mamokgadi village in the greater Letaba municipality on Wednesday.

The event formed part of the department's Mandela Week activities in the build-up to Mandela Day on Monday.

The minister said the youth should not treat agriculture as dirty work but must understand that by farming they emulated Nelson Mandela.

According to Molewa her department would spend about R190,6million to fund 11 irrigation projects that would create about 1032 jobs.

In Limpopo alone a similar project will create more than 600 job opportunities for local people," Molewa said.
