Rape suspects apply for bail

FOUR men facing charges of rape, robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, will today all apply for bail at the Bethlehem magistrate's court in Free State.

The men, Joseph Klakhi, Steven Klakhi, Mohanoe Molaba, and Motsibi Motaung from Bohlokong township in Bethlehem first appeared in court on 29 June and were remanded in custody. The case was then postponed to today.

Their victims are a 22-year-old girl and her boyfriend who were attacked while walking home on the night of 27 June in Bohlokong.

Free State police spokesperson Sergeant Majang Mosupa said the suspects stopped the couple and asked the boyfriend for a cigarette before allegedly attacking them.

"The couple was on their way home at about 11pm when they were allegedly stopped by the four suspects who asked the girl's boyfriend for a cigarette.

"The boyfriend told them he does not smoke.

"One of the suspects drew a knife and the boyfriend ran away, leaving his girlfriend behind.

"The suspect chased the boyfriend, caught up with him and allegedly stabbed him in both hands. The suspect then went back to his friends," Mosupa said.

"All four suspects first allegedly assaulted the girl before dragging her to an open veld.

"There all four suspects took turns raping her before continuing the assault. The suspects allegedly robbed her of her cellphone and some money before running away," Mosupa said.

The injured couple reported the matter to Bethlehem police who took them to Phekolong Hospital.

However, it did not take the police long to arrest all the suspects.

"The first suspect was arrested in Bohlokong hours after the attack while the rest were rounded up the following day," said Mosupa.
