ANC vows to take all municipalities in Gauteng

WITH only 13 days to go before the elections, the ANC in Gauteng is optimistic that it will win all the municipalities in the province.

ANC provincial secretary David Makhura said: "Since January this year we have interacted with 2million people through door-to-door campaigns ... and last month was the most successful with more than 1million people reached.

"Since the Easter weekend our work rate has doubled and we are now reaching 500000 people a week," he said, adding that he was confident his party would reach 1,5million extra people by May 18.

He said door-to-door campaigning remained the first pillar of his party's electioneering strategy.

"The second pillar has been sectoral work that focused on major campaign activities to create a buzz and razzmatazz among different sectors such as women, children, workers and religious sector."

Makhura said the third pillar of their campaign focused on specific campaigns aimed at breaking new ground and building support areas where the ANC support has been marginal over the years, including Midvaal. He said the new approach to the list process, especially community involvement, had not received a fair assessment by the media.

"The media exaggerated the problems without acknowledging the positive feedback from communities," he said. "Few instances of disgruntlement were presented as chaos in the ANC."

In Gauteng, Makhura said, the real picture was that ANC candidates have been endorsed overwhelmingly by their communities.

"But this did not stop those who lost to try and organise a section of their supporters to protest against the legitimately chosen candidates.

The ANC will hold the Siyangoba Rally at FNB Stadium on May 15, and Makhura said "all our activities will culminate in this rally".
