New era for varsity

THE newly appointed administrator at the troubled University of Zululand, Professor Chris de Beer, yesterday made his first visit to the institution.

De Beer, who was appointed by Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande, spent the day engaged in meetings with the university management and SRC.

According to a letter Nzimande sent to the university, De Beer's appointment came into effect on Monday, April 18. The letter states that his appointment will not exceed a period of two years and will be reviewed in 12 months' time.

Vice-chancellor and rector Fikile Mazibuko described De Beers's arrival as "a new era with emphasis on academic excellence".
