Whoonga 'a new pandemic'

KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize is a worried man

WHOONGA is the biggest threat to KwaZulu-Natal to such an extent that failure to deal with it and rid the province of it is likely to become a catastrophe.

This was the warning by provincial Premier Zweli Mkhize, pictured, during the biennial substance abuse summit in Durban yesterday.

Mkhize said the problem of substance abuse, especially whoonga, was becoming a new pandemic. He said whoonga was a threat to democracy as it has caused some heinous murders and the violence associated with them.

He said there were always signs and urged the community to be vigilant and act decisively.

Musician and former drug addict Kabelo Mabalane shared his experience, saying cigarette and alcohol was the starting point to becoming a drug addict. He said he got involved in drugs in 1996.

He said when he checked into rehab he faced many difficulties until he admitted he was powerless against the drug.

"I have been clean from drugs for eight years and six months," he said.
