War on substance abuse

GOVERNMENT has renewed its efforts to clamp down on substance abuse

This was the commitment by President Jacob Zuma when he addressed delegates at the second biennial substance abuse summit in Durban yesterday.

Zuma said alcohol and drug abuse as well as drug trafficking will receive renewed commitment from his government.

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini said the effects of alcohol and substance abuse are as broad and insidious as they are indisputable.

"Alcohol and substance abuse is a major contributor to crime, foetal alcohol syndrome, gender-based violence, poverty and dysfunctional family life."
