R56m diamond thief arrested

A 32-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in connection with the theft of a diamond valued at R56 million, Northern Cape police said yesterday.

Captain Cherelle Ehlers said Dennis Bernard Kerrebroeck, a citizen of Canada, was arrested in Sandton, Johannesburg last Sunday.

He appeared in the Strydenburg District Court on Wednesday, and his case was postponed to March 10. He remained in custody.

She said it was believed the diamond, weighing 143,66, carats was stolen in Hopetown in 2008.

The diamond has since been recovered in the US, she said.

Ehlers was unable to say how the diamond was stolen and traced to the USA, saying it was part of the investigations.
