A land of selective justice

A MULTI-pronged investigation into Aurora - the mining company owned by Nelson Mandela's grandson Zondwa and President Jacob Zuma's nephew Khulubuse - continues to drag on as conditions at their mines deteriorate

The departments of labour and water affairs, the Human Rights Commission (HRC), the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the police have been probing various offences for months.

The investigations began after Aurora took over operations at the Grootvlei mine in Springs, east of Johannesburg, late last year.

The company is being investigated for deteriorating living conditions for miners who have been living there with no electricity, water and salaries since April.

It is also being probed for mismanaging Unemployment Insurance Fund contributions the miners made, dumping toxic wastewater into the nearby Blesbokspruit, as well as the deaths of four illegal miners after a shootout with security guards of a company owned by former reality TV contestant Bradford "Bad Brad" Wood.

In May, the Department of Water Affairs opened a case against Aurora. Its spokesperson Marius Keet said the case was handed to the NPA in June, and they were still awaiting laboratory results. NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said he could not comment yesterday as he could not establish which prosecutor was given the file.

HRC spokesperson Vincent Moagi said they were investigating the inhuman living conditions at Aurora's mine near Springs.

Labour spokesperson Page Boikanyo was also unable to provide an update, saying he could only do so today.

Freedom Front Plus MP Pieter Groenewald intends to take action of his own against Aurora.

"I am in the process of laying criminal charges against them with the police because what they are doing is fraud and theft."

The National Union of Mineworkers spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said: "For me it's a whole cover up by the police. It actually tells you of a land of selective justice where the powerful are feared by law enforcement and the poor are quickly tackled."

Police Colonel Noxolo Kweza said: "We haven't really arrested anyone, we haven't even said if Brad is a suspect or not.
