Passport offices shift for Zimbabweans

FROM today Zimbabweans who want to regularise their status in South Africa will have to go to Polokwane to apply for passports.

Because of the large number of people in need of documentation the Zimbabwean embassy has temporarily moved its operations from Tshwane to Polokwane, closer to the border, to enable Zimbabweans to get their passports easily.

Zimbabwean consul general, Chris Mapanga told CAJNews yesterday that "this is aimed at reducing the travelling costs for thousands of Zimbabweans, mainly those working on commercial farms around Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and the surrounding areas of Musina and Makhado".

He said for now passports would not be issued at Cosatu House in Johannesburg.

"The temporary change in location is to ensure that as many Zimbabwean nationals as possible can access services for passport applications within the set time frame," Mapanga said.

The Polokwane office will be in Fairly Street, Ivydale, Polokwane, 5km from town just off the N1 highway in the direction of Johannesburg.

Yesterday Home Affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the deadline for the Zimbabweans to regularise their stay would not be extended.

"The cabinet decision was that the due date would be December 31 and as far as I know it has not been reviewed."
