Suspended DG wins back job

SUSPENDED Limpopo director-general Nelly Manzini has successfully fought against Premier Cassel Mathale's decision to remove her from her post

This follows a ruling by the Labour Court that Manzini should be reinstated in her position.

The court described her dismissal as "double jeopardy" since the crimes she was alleged to have committed had already been cleared.

Mathale had temporarily sidelined Manzini on August 17 after allegations that the premier was planning to employ his own ally as Manzini was among staff members who had served under his predecessor Sello Moloto.

The charges levelled at Manzini, which led to her suspension, were also described as a purge of administrators who had served under Moloto.

After her suspension, Manzini took the matter to the Labour Court and successfully won the bid to haveMathale's decision declared illegal.

Manzini has been reporting for duty since Friday last week as per the court ruling, but it is not clear if she is in her usual position.

While she was on suspension Mathale's office had announced that Manzini's suspension was triggered by issues raised by the auditor-general and the standing committee on public accounts four years ago.

The two units wanted suspicions of fraud and corruption to be probed against Manzini over the R16,5 million Provincial Growth and Development Strategy tender awarded to Samba Trading, a company owned by Ben Mphahlele.

It was suspected that Manzini had played a role in the tender process but this was later cleared by Scopa.

Though acting provincial government spokesperson Tebatso Mabitsela confirmed yesterday that Manzini had been reinstated, he said they would still proceed with a disciplinary inquiry.

However, Sowetan has learnt that there was an alleged plan to appoint education head of department Benny Boshielo to Manzini's position.
