200 converts baptised in a mass ceremony

TWO hundred Cape Town converts defied the bitter cold False Bay waters as they took a plunge in a mass baptismal ceremony conducted by the Free Reformed Apostolic Church on Sunday.

Archbishop Ntsikelelo Caldwell Sineke, who conducted the ceremony, said he was happy to see "young people taking charge of their lives and letting God rule them".

"All of these young people came to the church with many problems, but they are now managing their lives," Sineke said.

The congregation has members all over the Cape Flats, in new townships like Bloekombos and Du Noon, as well as in Tembisa.

As part of Heritage Month, Sineke said, they held a five-day revival umgidi, to which members from all branches sent in delegates.

"It was a spiritual revival and we claimed our Christian heritage through prayers," the archbishop said.

FRAC secretary Nomzamo Mngonyama said they also invited graduates to the sermon to motivate young ones to study.

"Churches like ours are often undermined, and by getting our graduates' congregants we succeeded in showing our youth that they too can achieve and become good members of the society," Mngonyama said.

She said in most places where they had branches crime and drug use were rife, and to attract youths they adopted sport and cultural programmes.

"Our brass brand is the most popular and even gets invited to non-church activities," she said.

Sineke urged congregants to use their "revived spirits" to spread the word of God and build better communities.
