Tourism boom doing SME's good

THE tourism sector and its role in sustained economic growth and job creation has been so critical that the country saw the exponential growth in foreign arrivals culminating in more than 9, 9 million foreign arrivals last year.

This was revealed by Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk in Durban yesterday.

He was speaking during a Tourism Enterprise Partnership (TEP) dialogue focusing on the importance of enterprise development for South Africa's tourism sector.

He said unlocking the potential of SMME's was absolutely vital to addressing unemployment.

"Not only is it a core component of our BBBEE strategy, but it is also internationally accepted as a very effective way to tackle poverty."

TEP's general manager of operations, Lisa-Ann Hosking said they assist SMME's with training and other needs.

"TEP's hands-on, step-by-step development programmes have helped to create over 54 000 jobs, translating to increased revenue in small tourism business sector of R4, 2 billion," she said.
