Support for strike

THE Federation of Unions of South Africa says votes from its members show that most "overwhelmingly" voted to go on strike this week.

Fedusa general secretary Dennis George said the official tallying of the votes would be completed today.

"We are concerned about the impending strike, especially with pupils having had a long vacation and the matric final exams coming up," he said.

Over 1million public servants declared a dispute with government last month. The unions demand an 8,6percent salary increase, R1000 housing allowance and the equalisation of subsidies for medical aid.

Last Thursday Minister of Public Service and Administration Richard Baloyi made a new offer and raised the housing allowance offer from R620 to R750.

Cosatu negotiator Magwena Maluleke said his unions would have a final mandate from members tomorrow.

"The new housing allowance offer will only be considered on Thursday at the bargaining council and we cannot comment on it."

The Public Servants' Association (PSA) declared last week that its members will down tools on Thursday.

PSA spokesperson Manie de Clercq said: "The government offer would be too late because our members would have embarked on a strike that morning."
