Zoleka Mandela tells her story

When hope whispers Zoleka Mandela found the courage to share her emotional journey of childhood, motherhood and healing process of losing two kids and living with breast cancer.

The Mandela’s always have a story to tell, this time we not focusing on our very own icon Nelson Mandela nor his former wife Winnie, it’s the granddaughter who has an anecdote.

The 33 year old has released a book titled ‘When hope whispers’ where she tells it all about her life and battle with drug, alcohol, sex addiction and living with breast cancer.

The book was launched this month and it is now available at Exclusive Books nationwide at a cost of R195.

She wrote the book with the aim to give hope and inspire those who have suffered from substance abuse as well as spread cancer awareness.

Not only does the book aim to inspire she shares her deepest wounds and life regrets of not being a better mother to her children.

“I was the worst parent to my kids and I know that what I’m doing right now is celebrating my kids so that I can at least make them proud one day. (The editing process) was extremely difficult because I hadn’t been truthful to myself and an honest person for a very long time in my life so I always have to remember the reason I wrote this book and remember the promises I’m making.

Sharing her life journey she courageously makes public in the book how drugs took over her parenting life. This all happened during the time when her 13 year old daughter Zenani was killed in a car accident the night of the Fifa world cup concert in 2010.

““I hadn’t seen my daughter for 10 days before her passing, and I hadn’t because I chose to use drugs. That’s obviously a reminder that I chose my addiction over my kids and I have to live with that for the rest of my life.”

The tragedy of losing a child did not end there she lost another baby. Her son Zenawe was born prematurely in 2011 and her wounds were cut deep.

She has now gone from suicidal to survival.

“I’m at a phase in my life right now where I believe that the sacrifices I’m making are to the benefit of others,” Mandela says.
