IF the weather gods are kind this weekend the streets of Soweto will be a spectacle of colour and fun.
From Saturday until Sunday, South Africa's biggest township will be hosting the Gauteng Carnival 2012.
The carnival, which will take place at Mofolo Park, is expected to attract thousands of participants who will be dressed in colourful big costumes and puppets.
This jamboree that started in 2005 is part of the Heritage Month celebrations aimed at commemorating and promoting diversity and incorporating various forms of dance and parade.
This year's theme is "Celebrating our Heritage and Freedom".
More than 18,000 participants from across the province will parade from Mofolo Park on a 5.6km² route and return to Mofolo Park. The parade route features sites of historical significance in Soweto, including the June 16 uprising trail and the world-famous Vilakazi Street.
This year's carnival will also include participants from KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, the North West and the Eastern Cape.
A total of 3,500 participants from Johannesburg, followed by 5,000 from Tshwane, Sedibeng, West Rand and Ekurhuleni will be portray the Gateway to Africa and the world will be at the tail end of the parade.
Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation spokesperson Nino Zama said wet weather was not going to deter revellers from having fun.
