Innovative AJ invents mobile DJ turntable set

DJ AJ has combined his ingenuity for deejaying with a new way to rock a party.

AJ, whose real name is Arthur Mafokate Junior, "invented" a mobile DJ turntable set that he uses while mingling with revellers.

The 21-year-old artist told Sowetan that the set is worth R12000 and weighs 15kg.

"I bought a pioneer controller and took it to a hardware store so they could weld in metal loops on it. They needed to use strong metal because it is heavy. It's fragile. With that in mind, I did the design myself," he said.

The invention is a set of turntables attached to a metal chain that he wears around his neck and extended cords that plug into the amplifier, allowing him to mix and mingle as he deejays.

"I have already used it at six gigs, and the advantage is that I get to be more interactive with the crowd. I am able to dance and I am able to walk around with it while playing. The advantage is that you are seen by the crowd and that works well for a DJ," said AJ.

He is yet to name his device but has been dubbed "The Guitar Hero" by some of his audience who were intrigued by his ingenuity.

He said he would be using it next year as he promotes his new album Keamogetswe "... it [the album] will be named after my first love. Unfortunately, the relationship ended at the beginning of this year."

AJ also presents Skull Candy Dance Nights on community radio station Mix FM on Sunday mornings.
