Ukhozi FM makes huge Satma U-turn

AFTER throwing its toys out of the cot, snubbing the South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma), Ukhozi FM has reconsidered.

The biggest radio station in Africa apparently pulled out of the Satma awards nomination list. The ninth edition of the awards takes place tonight and tomorrow in Alice, Eastern Cape.

Ukhozi FM had pulled out of two categories: Best Traditional Music Show and Best Traditional DJ in a Public Broadcasting Station (PBS).

But the Satma committee had decided not to withdraw it in the nomination because of an agreement with the public broadcaster, the SABC.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago confirmed in a statement that Ukhozi FM decided to remain in the awards after consultations with senior radio management at the corporation.

According to sources close to the situation, Ukhozi had pulled out of the awards because the station was tired of losing in those two categories for three consecutive years.

Umhlobo Wenene DJ Saba Mbixane had scooped the two awards.

Kganyago said the station would like to apologise for the confusion that might have been caused earlier regarding its participation.

"The station pledges to further support the Satmas by doing a live broadcast from Alice during the awards."

Satma spokeswoman Thandi Mkhize welcomed Ukhozi's change of heart.
