Contestant Hloni Mahate leaves Idols fans in tears

Every Idols episode brings with it new personalities and the stories behind them however Hloni Mahate’s story is one that will remain in the hearts of many South Africans.

The 22-year old from Springs had judges in tears as they heard how he had just come from his girlfriend’s funeral to attend the auditions.

“I was in pain, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t think it was real until I saw her at the funeral. She always wanted me to do this, she believed in me…”

The young father explained that his girlfriend had always encouraged him to enter the competition, adding that he had decided to enter in her honour.

Judges were impressed by his rendition of Maroon 5’s Sunday Morning and all gave him a thumbs up.

“I don’t care what science says but there’s a man called God, and when He decides things happen, they happen,” he said after receiving the golden ticket.

Mahate’s girlfriend fell sick soon after giving birth to their baby in October, his audition came a few days after her death and just hours after she was buried.
